Mr Smith joined other committee members to update the NICE quality standard [QS130] for skin cancer. This quality standard covers preventing, assessing, diagnosing and managing skin cancer (melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer). It describes high-quality care in priority areas for improvement.
Following a consultation the new standard was published in January 2024, replacing the previous one from 2016. NICE quality standards are reviewed every year in England and Wales to ensure that the highest standard of care is provided.
The new standard published in January identified two key areas:
- changes in the priority areas for improvement
- updated guidance on melanoma
